Because the ferrule is cushion shaped, the thrust ball bearing is divided into two types: flat bottom cushion type and self-aligning spherical cushion type. In addition, the bearing can bear axial load, but can not bear radial load.
NSK thrust ball bearings have two types: unidirectional and bidirectional. The unidirectional thrust ball bearing is composed of two rings (shaft ring and bearing race) and a retaining structure equipped with balls. The two-way thrust ball bearing is composed of three rings and two retaining structures equipped with balls. In case of bidirectional type, the shaft ring is clamped by two cages equipped with balls.
